Cisco was founded in San Francisco in 1984 by Stanford University researchers Leonard Bosack and Sandy Lerner, and is now headquartered in San Jose, California. It is the world's leading supplier of network infrastructure. Its portfolio covers routers, switches, data-center equipment, network security products, Webex unified communications, and the proprietary Silicon One networking chip, building a core IP networking technology stack that runs from chip and hardware through to software. The products are widely deployed in carrier networks, data centers, government and enterprise networks, industrial networks, and AI compute networks. In 2000 Cisco briefly ranked first in the world by market capitalization, and in 2024 it completed its $28 billion acquisition of Splunk, providing the core hardware behind the global internet and enterprise private networks.
