BOM Shortage & Obsolescence Response

Practical workflow for prioritizing constrained lines, exact MPN validation, alternative review, documentation and quote comparison during shortages.

Resource overview

Stabilize the requirement first

During a shortage, uncontrolled substitutions create technical and commercial risk. Separate the BOM into exact-MPN mandatory lines, approved-alternative lines and engineering-review lines.

For every constrained line

  • Confirm manufacturer, exact MPN and revision/package constraints.
  • Record required quantity, target date and destination.
  • Check lifecycle/obsolescence context and authorized-channel availability where applicable.
  • Define acceptable date code, traceability and inspection requirements.
  • Evaluate alternatives only against the electrical, mechanical, regulatory and software constraints that matter.

Compare quotes on more than price

Lead time, source context, condition, documentation, return terms and verification scope can materially change the risk of a quote.

How to use this guide

  • Use it to narrow product families and sourcing requirements.
  • Confirm exact electrical, mechanical and environmental values against the latest manufacturer datasheet.
  • Provide the exact manufacturer part number / ordering code when requesting availability.
